Commemoration Ceremony at Grange, Co . Limerick on Sunday last

Despite the very treacherous road conditions around Grange, Co. Limerick a large group of people made their way to the the Church in Grange last Sunday morning. A Mass of Commemoration was celebrated to commemorate the memory of those who were killed at Caherguillamore on Sunday 27^th December 1920.

After Mass a ceremony was held at the Republican plot in the adjoining graveyard. Many County Councillors joined invited guests as wreath was laid. Fr. Joseph Foley C.C Bruff, recited a decade of the Rosary. The Last Post sounded and the National Anthem was sung as the National Flag was raised.

The wreath was laid and the oration delivered by Patrick O’Donovan T.D. In a thoughtful and inspiring oration the T.D spoke about the events at Caherguillamore and placed them in the context of our present state of affairs.

He pointed out that we are approaching a time when many significant centenary celebrations or memorials will take place. These include the birth of the Irish Labour movement in Clonmel , the outbreak of the First World War, the 1916 Rising, the end of the Great War in 1918, The War of Independence 1920. The most significant centenary will be in 2016

T.D. . O’Donovan said “ ... we need to ask ourselves as we approach Easter 1916, what kind of Ireland do we want for future generations, and do we ensure that the legacy of Caherguillamore is properly lived out . I firmly believe that an essential part of that legacy building must be the pursuit by political leaders , of common goals on behalf of the Irish people.”

“Just like Robert Frost in the poem, “The Road not Taken,” Ireland is now at a junction. We have been presented with a choice, to take a road of looking backwards, of seeking recriminations. Of apportioning blame or we can take a road of looking forward , of building hope, of confronting problems of working together. The second road while it sounds the most positive, is the most difficult, especially for political leaderss, and is like Robert Frost said, the road less travelled. Now more than ever Ireland’s political leaders need to be brave, and to show the same courageas those at Caherguillamore. And while the modern challenge is not one of armed struggle, it is still one of adversity, of conquering economic problems rather than roblemsof occupation, and in doing so winning again our national sovereignity, our ability to make our own decisions and the right of the people again to self-determination”

On the recent visit of the Queen of England, he said “ I am certain that those that gathered (in Caherguillamore) on that faithful night to raise funds for the pursuit of freedom, would never have imagined that the grandaughter of the then King George V would, two short generations later, would vist the Garden of Rememberance in Dublin and bow her head as a mark of respect to thos who lost their lives fighting for Ireland”

Mr. O’Donovan finished by thanking those reponsible for organising such ceremonies saying that woithout the commitment of local volunteers other generations would lose a vitally important part of our heritage which is such a critical part of our identity.

Event on Sunday 13^th November at Lower Grange, Co. Limerick

A Plaque is to be unveiled to commemorate an important military action in the War of Independence. The incident was known as “The Ambush at Grange” and took place on the 8^th November 1920

The Plaque will be unveiled by historian Tom Toomey. Mr. Toomey’s book “The War of Independence in Limerick, 1919-1921” was published recently.

The ceremony starts at 2.00 pm on Sunday 13^th November and will take place at Lower Grange, on the Limerick Rd, on the city side of the Hamlet pub.

The event is organised by the Sean Wall Memorial Committee, originally founded to plan the construction of the Sean Wall Monument in Main Street, Bruff.

All members of the public who are interested are most welcome.

The ceremony will include a short talk by Thomas Twomey, the raising of the National Flag, the playing of the National Anthem and the Last Post. Prayers will be led by Canon James Costello from Bruff and Fr. Michael Cussen from Fedamore.

Secretary of the Sean Wall Memorial Committee, Mr. Michael J. Noonan said “we believe it is important to have some tangible reminder of these actions, honouring the bravery of the people involved. We must never forget that the birth of our nation was not gained easily”

The Grange Ambush

Information had been gathered in the Bruff Battalion area about a convoy of one or maybe two lorrys of RIC and Black and Tans that travelled between Limerick and Bruff. It was decided to ambush the convoy at Grange Bridge, a point about eight miles from Limerick and about four miles from Bruff. The ambush was set for Monday 8 November 1920. Because the ambush site was on the border between the 3rd Battalion East Limerick Brigade and the 4th Battalion Mid Limerick Brigade it was decided that the action would be a joint action involving the flying columns of both brigades.They would be supported by men from the local companies of Bruff,Grange and Holy Cross in the East Limerick Brigade and from the Fedamore and Ballybricken Companies of the Mid Limerick Brigade. Donnchadha O'Hannigan had overall command of the combined columns and most of the ambushers were placed in houses and behind walls on both sides of the road.”

The Concert last night was a great success. The quality of the musicians produced a standing ovation. The atmosphere in the Church was fantastic. Morning Star Rose Marie Kirby attended in her first official outing as the new Morning Star Rose and delighted everyone with her stunning appearance and graceful charm.

My apologies to Tom Walsh who was omitted from the list of thank you's on the concert programme. Details and Rules of Competition

The competition will have four Sections, two of which are age restricted.
The open Competition is without restriction on topic or style.
The other section has the theme or topic of “Bruff, People, Places and Buildings.”
Therefore there are four separate competitions.
Open Theme, for over 16 ‘s

Bruff, People, Places and Buildings for over 16’s

Size of photographs submitted: The only restriction is that photos are no larger than A4. ie. means that any size up to and including A4 is acceptable..
A maximum of five photographs may be submitted. An entry fee of €5 covers the entry of any number of photographs from 1 to 5. One photograph submitted costs €5 and up to 5 photographs submitted costs €5 ie. The total fee per
competitor is €5!
Entrants must mount their photographs in a manner suitable for display. This may range from the professional style mounting to a
photograph attached to backing with blu-tack, however there must be some mounting of photographs so that they can be
displayed. Un-mounted prints will not be accepted for competition..

Photographs/entries and fees may be left at the Post Office in Main Street, Bruff.
Please attach the following information to each entry.
Name, Section (eg. Open/Bruff Theme/ under or over 16 as is appropriate)
The photograph must be the entrants own work,
including any editing following the original picture capture.
Please be sure to include a telephone contact number and the entry fee.

Summer Music on the Shannon 2009:
World Class Summer Music School
Summer Music on the Shannon (SMS), established in 1994 by Clare Music Makers in Ennis, Co. Clare, invites instrumental and vocal students, ages 8 to adult, to become participants in its 16th consecutive season. With over 20 concerts in Counties Clare and Limerick, SMS is one of the largest and most successful classical summer music school festivals in Europe, which each year attracts over 200 professional musicians and music students of all ages from at least 16 countries and four continents.
SMS is internationally acclaimed in that there is, uniquely, no barrier to admission based on level of ability and no audition is required for admission to any of the Orchestral Instrument, Piano or Youth Opera Programmes. Children wishing to become part of this year’s opera production, ‘The Mermaid’ by Carl Davis, need not have had any previous musical training or experience. Young musicians playing orchestral and band instruments, or piano, only require ensemble experience or lessons for a minimum of one year.
The Instrumental Programme commences on Tuesday, August 4th (following the August Bank Holiday) and concludes on Sunday, August 16th with all musicians and students appearing on the stage of the University Concert Hall in a SMS 2009 Festival Finale celebration concert. Piano students will arrive at SMS on Monday, July 27th, one week earlier in order for them to attend master classes to be given by renowned performer and teacher, John Perry, from Los Angeles. They may register in the SMS Piano Programme for two or three weeks. The Youth Opera Theatre Programme commences on Monday, July 20th and concludes at the end of four weeks with fully-staged performances, with orchestra, of this year’s productions in UCH and theatres in nearby communities.
Students in all programmes may select from a wide range of classes and activities, including individual and class Lessons, Ensembles (orchestra, string, wind, brass, percussion, jazz, choir), Chamber Music, Trad Music, Art, Set and Costume Making, English as a Second Language plus Supervised Swimming at the UL Swimming Pool. Classes commence each day at 9.00am and conclude at 4.30pm, followed by short student recitals and, on most evenings, performances by faculty and/or students.
Highlighting the SMS summer school and festival will be the second visit of Carl Davis, C.B.E. (Hon.) acclaimed as one of the most gifted and versatile conductor/composers in the world today. Following on last year’s successful performances of his opera Peace, Carl Davis will be in Limerick this coming summer to supervise the production of The Mermaid, another of his extremely popular operas for young people. The Mermaid is based on the enchanting tale, The Little Mermaid, by Hans Christian Anderson.
In order to provide more opportunities for advanced vocalists this year, the SMS Opera Theatre will also be presenting a wonderfully humorous one-act production. Bernice Bobs Her Hair is based on the well-known tale by F.Scott Fitzgerald, with libretto by SMS 2009 Opera Director, John Gardyne, music by Matthew Miller and orchestration by Bruce Dunn. John is a Director, Writer and Producer with over twenty years experience in London’s West End and in leading opera houses throughout England. He is particularly well-known in European and Australian professional and amateur theatre companies for his best-selling book, Producing Musicals: A Practical Guide, published in 2004.
The superlative international faculty of thirty-six 2009 instrumental teachers will be joined by a number of musicians coming to Limerick for the first time. These include: David Bucknall, prominent solo cellist from London; Alex Nichol, double bass, formerly with the Manchester Hallé and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras; Gene Ramsbottom, clarinet instructor at the University of British Columbia in Canada and Principal Clarinet of the CBC Chamber Orchestra; Tim Brown, Principal Horn with the BBC Symphony and Dennis Miller, Principal Tuba player with the Montreal Symphony. All of the students attending SMS will not only get to meet and receive lessons from our illustrious faculty; they will also have the rare opportunity to play alongside them in each of the weekend Festival concerts,

NEXT OPEN-AIR MARKET
The Bruff Heritage Group are organising the next Open-Air Market on Saturday, April 25 located near the Church from 10-1pm. We are expecting an increased number of stalls now that it is up and running. If there is still any Bric-A-Brac which people wish to donate, please ring Paul Dennehy @ 087-9890652 and he will gladly arrange to have it collected. This event had to be cancelled because of awful weather.
COMMUNITY CAFÉ
At Chives formerly (The Abbey Bar) the Community Café is opening to the public on Saturday 25 and Sunday, April 26 after both Masses. Tea and refreshments will be served and all are welcome.
Predict the Score: The Bruff Bord na nOg are running a “Predict the Score” for the Limerick versus Waterford game on June 14, so we are selling cards for this match and we are asking for your support please. There is a prize of €200 for the winning score or nearest score. Lines on sale at the moment are €2 each.
BRUFF TIDY TOWNS – SPRING CLEAN
The Grove Park Committee are first out of the blocks with a “spring” in their steps and we thank them for their efforts in response to our appeal for Spring Clean Week. Bruff has had an amazing year in team sports. Tidy Towns is also a team game not limited in numbers and any number of people can take part. Next year we hope to arrange a competition between areas/estates and now would be a good time to organise yourselves and clean up your immediate environment. Individually you can do your own thing or if time has slowed your movements you can contact us with your ideas at 061-382109. April 20-26 is Spring Clean week in Bruff.
BRUFF UTD.
Our U’16 Girls contested the Cup Final Replay against Kilmallock last weekend. It was a very good team performance but the girls were unlucky on the night, scoring just one goal to Kilmallock’s five. Sueanne O’Leary was the goal scorer for Bruff.
Our Junior Team played Pike Rovers B on Saturday at home. Andy O’Neill scored for Bruff, making the final score 1-1.
MEANUS DEFIBRILLATION COURSE
A heart saver defibrillator was installed at Meanus Community Centre last year. Thirteen people were trained to use this defibrillator and in Cardio Pulmenary Resussitation (CPR). Another training session will take place at the Community Centre in the near future. It is desirable that more people from the Parish would avail of this course which is only 3 hours approx. Understandably the more people trained in this service the more benefit it will be to our Parish and to our families.
Certification by the Irish Heart Foundation is valid for two years after successfully completing the course. Those interested in taking part in this very worthwhile community based programme are requested to ring the secretary at 087-2193555.

Bruff RFC on the way to Division Two?

Bruff look certain to be promoted to division two for the first time in their history following an emphatic 18-0 win over second-placed Queens University.
Their scorers were Brian Cahill, try and conversion and Tony Cahill, try and two penalties.
Bruff, who need two more points to ensure promotion, now lead division three on 56 points with Instonians on 51 and Banbridge on 47.

Limerick Rose Selection

The Limerick Rose selection takes place in April, as the regional final of the Rose of Tralee Festival. Bruff will be represented by Sarah Sheehy, The reigning Morning Star Rose. The process starts soon (14th March) with the induction evening. Last year Bruff Cultural and Arts Society was represented by Edel McEniry.

End of Season report from Bruff Hockey Club

Bruff took on Church of Ireland of Cork on Saturday last. It was a disappointing day for the Bruff ladies as they experienced defeat by a superior side. Church of Ireland has had a fantastic season and finish first in the league with Bruff finishing second. This cup semi final game was played in Garryduff in Cork and puts an end to the 2007/2008 season for the club.

The game began at a high pace and there was immediate pressure on the Bruff defence. As a result of this Church of Ireland scored the game’s opening goal 10 minutes into the game. Throughout the first half Church of Ireland began to build up a lead and went into the half time break well ahead.

Bruff’s performance did improve in the second half and were unlucky not to get on the score sheet due to a strong Church of Ireland defence. It was Church of Ireland who took their chances and extended their lead leaving the final score Church of Ireland 5 Bruff 0.

As the season is complete Bruff are delighted with finishing second and will be aiming at first place within the division next season. It’s been a great year for the club and great credit is due to players and committee for their dedication and commitment all season long. Club membership is now due for renewal and new members are also welcome. The annual fee is Eu30 for adults and Eu10 for students and OAP’s, please contact Ger Browne who is club membership secretary or any club officer. Buff GAA club this year as part of a new fundraising initiative are offering long term 15 year membership of the club. For details of this offer contact any club officer or committee member.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be launching a number of exciting projects that will be key to promoting our club as well as assisting in reducing the current loans incurred by building a modern sports complex which is providing a great service to not just our own members but to the wider community as a whole. Therefore it is imperative that we all help in whatever way we can to make sure we continue to provide the best facilities available for our community.

Committee meetings will continue to be held at our complex from 8pm on Monday nights, please make every effort to attend. Coming soon, Bruff GAA leisure wear, we are hoping to have a club shop up and running in the next week which will provide a wide range of clothing for children and adults, featuring our club crest.

Bruff hockey ladies played their last game of the 2007/2008 league on Saturday last against Belvedere of Cork. The girls from Co. Limerick finished the league just like they started with a fantastic victory over Belvedere. This win ensures that Bruff will finish in second place in the league.

Saturday’s game was Bruff’s first match of 2008 due to fixtures been cancelled and clubs unable to field full squads. Due to this it took Bruff a long period to settle into the game. The first half was a stop start affair with frees being awarded to both teams but unable to find the target resulting in the half ending scoreless.
The second half saw Bruff totally transformed, they emerged a new team after an inspiring half time talk from the captain. From the tip off the Bruff mid-fielders and forward line had Belvedere under huge pressure. Players began to utilise the ball and 10 minutes into the half Bruff were awarded a penalty. Gillian Keane step up to the penalty spot where she made no mistake in powering the ball past the Belvedere keeper, to open the scoring of the game. From here Bruff never looked back but Belvedere never gave up. They continued to put Bruff under pressure inside their own "22" without success. In general the game was played in a hard competitive spirit but Belvedere failed to score. Best for Bruff up front was Sharon Bulfin, who scored a great goal from an acute angle, along with Cathy Wallace who left the Belvedere goalie with no chance from her unstoppable shot which hit the back post. Caroline Collins played a huge role in delivering great ball into the circle Both Jennifer Liston and Catriona Kennedy were unlucky not to add to the score line, while great credit goes to the Bruff defence and goalie Lisa Ryan who were so solid throughout the game and denied Belvedere a score.

A CD dedicated to the memory of Cliona Ring is available at several outlets in Bruff. Cliona, the daughter of Terry and Brendan Ring, was at the tender age of 7, diagonosed with an in-operable brain tumour; despite her illness Cliona enjoyed life immensely until her untimely death on 2nd December 2007. The CD is a beautiful and thought provoking memorial to a young girl. Funds raised through the sale of the CD will go towards supporting families of sick children away from home.

To read "I Love my Life" by Cliona gives us an insight into the mind of a brave young girl who was obviously an extraordinary and brave person.

The Bruff Rugby Club site, www.bruffrfc.com. has been nominated in the Sports Blog Category and the Best Newcomer in the national awards lists.
"We're over the moon," said Bruff's webmaster, Richard Leonard upon hearing of the news. "It came as a nice surprise although we did know the site had become very popular. Over the last month alone, there were 171,000 hits on the site and 109,000 of them were from the US. We've also received a lot of hits from some less obvious places like Cameroon, the Lebanon and Zimbabwe."

Death of Mary Shanahan

THE death of Mary Shanahan, Main Street Bruff occurred recently in the Regional Hospital, Limerick. Mary will be remembered for her outstanding services as Sacristan of Ss. Peter and Paul’s Church for over 40 years. Sympathy is extended to her daughter, Mary: Son in law John: her grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Requiem Mass for the repose of her soul was celebrated by Fr. James Costello,P.P. The concelebrants were Fr. Joe Foley and Fr. Desmond Mc Auliffe. Mary was laid to rest with her late husband in the adjoining cemetery. May she rest in peace.

Council Replaces Connections To Properties Affected By Bruff Drinking Water Notice
30.01.2008 15:27:36 Bruff, County Limerick, 30th January 2008 – Limerick County Council confirmed today that it is presently replacing lead service connections to ten separate properties in Bruff, which have shown signs of elevated levels of lead in their drinking water supply.
(live-PR.com) - The notice was originally issued on 14th January last, on the advice of the Health Services Executive (HSE), after low levels of lead were detected in some town centre premises during routine monitoring of drinking water.

Based on the results of the monitoring carried out to date, Limerick County Council has said it is satisfied that the source of the water is not displaying elevated levels of lead with no known health risk attached to short term consumption. The HSE, meanwhile, has confirmed that testing has shown that drinking water supplies to all local schools are satisfactory, and schools have been notified accordingly.While the water notice will remain in place and the monitoring of water supplies premises will continue, the local authority said it would be providing safe drinking water at three town centre locations from tomorrow (Thursday). The locations are Collinstown Terrace, Park View (across from the Monument) and the entrance to Chapel Street. Commenting on the Council’s role in addressing the issue, Mr. Paul Crowe, Director of Transportation and Water Services, explained, “A monitoring programme has been ongoing and elevated levels of lead have again been detected in certain locations while other locations have been well below the limits specified in the Drinking Water Regulations. As a result, and following consultations with the HSE, the notice advising residents in the Main Street and Hospital Road areas not to drink the tap water is to remain in force.”He continued, “The problem is site specific and relates primarily to older premises, and most likely linked to the presence of lead pipes either within householders’ premises or between the watermain itself and the premises. As the water supply in the watermain itself is safe to drink, the Council will, in the interim, provide safe drinking water locations for affected residents.”Mr. Crowe said that the Council had begun implementing an action programme aimed at redressing the problem. Among the programme objectives is the identification and monitoring of the water quality in premises, which may have lead connections while providing notification of monitoring results to individual property owners. Where it is confirmed that a property does not to have a lead connection or lead pipes and is not at risk, the property owner will be notified accordingly. Elsewhere, replacement connections from the watermain to the stopcock are presently being provided for ten properties that have displayed elevated levels of lead in the water. Where it is identified in the course of this work that a lead connection is in place from the stopcock to the property, the property owner will be advised to have it replaced.Limerick County Council is also initiating a programme to eliminate all lead connections to the watermains in Bruff, and advise householders who have lead pipework within their properties to replace same. Further details of this programme will be announced once it has been developed. Meanwhile, Limerick County Council indicated that the tap water could safely be used for personal washing, showering and bathing including for brushing teeth. It is also safe for the preparation and cooking of vegetables and for the washing of clothes and dishes.However, the Council is advising householders not to use the tap water for drinking, even if boiled; and not to make ice cubes, dilutable drinks, stews/soups or formula feeds for babies.Two helplines, 061-496326 (9.30-4.30) and 061-419226 (after hours), have been set up to advise members of the public in the affected areas.

Bruff continue to set the pace following their 10th straight win, a hardfought 21-16 triumph away to Connemara.
Instonians, who have lost one game in 10, are hot on their heels and had a comfortable 38-13 victory at home to Sunday's Well. Next up is the long-awaited clash between Bruff and Instonians in Co Limerick on February 9.
Queens kept the top two in sight by virtue of their 38-7 win over City of Derry who remain rooted to the bottom, just behind Waterpark, who lost 26-9 away to Naas.

Bruff Drinking Water Notice To Remain In Place Over Weekend
Co. Limerick, Ireland — 18 Jan. 2008 — County Limerick, 18th January 2008 – A drinking water notice issued earlier this week to parts of Bruff, County Limerick is to remain in place until further notice, Limerick County Council announced today.
Limerick County Council issued the notice last Monday, on the advice of the Health Services Executive (HSE), after low levels of lead were detected in some town centre premises.
However, the results of extensive monitoring carried out during the past week have been encouraging, according to the Water Services Authority.
Mr. Paul Crowe, Director of Services, stated, “At the marginally elevated levels of lead initially detected, there is no recognised health risk attached to short term consumption. The drinking water notice remains in place, however, as a precautionary measure.”
He continued, “Council staff, who will be carrying appropriate ID, will be conducting further tests on the water in Bruff early next week. Limerick County Council is offering to test the water for any premises in the above affected area for traces of lead. The turnaround time for samples will be seven to ten days.”
“In the meantime, however, we ask people in the affected area not to drink water from the main supply while they should also ensure that ice cubes in fridges and freezers are discarded. We would also ask the public to inform the County Council of elderly or disabled residents, who may require special assistance”, added Mr. Crowe.
Mr. Crowe indicated that Limerick County Council would issue a further update next week.

THE people of Bruff were left bemused this week after a sudden and strict warning was issued to local residents and businesses requesting them not to drink water from the main public supply.
Limerick County Council issued the instruction this Tuesday after higher than permitted levels of lead were detected in water supplies in some town centre premises.However, according to some concerned local residents, they have been given little information about the situation and the possible health implications."I got a notice through the door and I rang the helpline number given. The lady I spoke to, I felt sorry for her because she didn't know what to tell me. My concern is, how long has the lead been there, has it been going on for years and what is being done about it," asked John O'Riordan

Man killed in road accident near Bruff

He was John Sheehan who was single and had just moved out to live in the Murroe area.

He was originally from the Pennywell area of Garryowen.

The incident happened shortly after six o’clock last evening when a van struck him while out walking.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardai at Bruff are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact them on 061 382940.

Mr Sheehan`s death brings to 17 the number of fatalities on Limerick roads so far this year.

$2.5m Triplets home to Bruff!

After extensive medical treatment in the US, the O’Riordans are home for their first Christmas.

John O’Riordan and his wife, Valerie, were both working in New York when the children were born three months prematurely. John was vice president in a bank and Valerie worked as a nurse.

The birth of the triplets was all the more remarkable given that Valerie was 48 at the time. “After having Laura — who is now eight — we decided that we wanted another child. But there were difficulties and after a number of years with IVF I became pregnant again,” said Valerie.

Triplets Gerry, Sean and Jean arrived on December 12, 2005 — three months premature.

“They spent more than three months in hospital and they really were miracle babies to get through given their weights when they were born. Gerry was three pounds four ounces, Jean three nine and Sean was four pounds.”

The couple had health insurance, which was just as well given that the hospital bills came to $2.5m.

However, caring for the babies when they came home from hospital took up so much time and work, the couple decided it was time to move back home to Bruff, Co Limerick, where they had already bought a house.

“It was just feed, feed, feed. And there was little or no back-up care in New York for mothers who had multiple births. It wasn’t a great situation. But now as they are getting older they are developing their own personalities and I would have it no other way since coming back home. You have to be positive from the moment you get up in the morning and enjoy the children and our life,” Valerie said.

Since arriving back last September, quality of life has changed dramatically. They have a fantastic support team of parents, brothers, sisters, nieces, cousins and in-laws who all help with the triplets.

“We have no problem if we want to go out for a night,” Valerie said.

Halvey case adjourned

Halvey case adjourned for five months
The case against former Munster rugby player Eddie Halvey has been adjourned for five months.
Halvey, from the South Circular Road in Limerick City, is charged with dangerous driving causing death at Coole, Toomeyvarra in April of 2006.
He was charged after a collision in which 16 year old Kevin Walsh, from Bruff, County Limerick was killed.
Halvey will be before the courts again on March 4, 2008

Bruff R.F.C go through in AIB Cup

Old Crescent's divisional advantage continued for little against Division Three champions Bruff whose consistent display helped them eek out a 19-12 victory over their Limerick rivals.

In what was the sides' first ever meeting in an AIB-sponsored competition, Bruff were well on course for a place in the third round as they had a 19-0 buffer built up by the interval. Powerful work by big Martin O'Rourke (above) made a significant difference for Bruff, including starting many of their breaks.

Prop David Horan plunged over for a 31st-minute try, which Brian Cahill converted, and Cahill fired over four penalties - after 9, 14, 38 and 40 minutes - to stretch the hosts nearly three converted scores clear.

Crescent, good winners over Naas last weekend, predictably came back with Billy Leahy and Alan Purcell both nabbing tries, with the latter adding one conversion, but Bruff controlled matters in the final quarter and will be a team to avoid in January's third round.

Ancient crematorium is uncovered at Bruff site

A PRE-HISTORIC archaeological find containing fragments of cremated bone has been discovered in Bruff during site clearance work for a Limerick County Council housing development.
Archaeologists from Headland Archaeology Ltd have been excavating the site of a ring barrow for the last fortnight on behalf of the council. For more information and details click here.

Man dies in County Limerick explosion

A man has died following an explosion at a house at Lough Gur near Bruff.
Reports suggest that there was a strong smell of gas in the area after the blast occurred at approximately 1200 today.
Bord Gais have said that there are no gas pipelines in the area however.

An investigation is currently underway. The man, believed to be a foreign national, has not yet been named.
Gardai at Bruff, who are investigating today’s explosion say that the incident is not believed to be suspicious.
A gas cylinder exploding is now thought to have killed the man, said to be a Lithuanian national this morning.
The middle aged” man was a tenant at the cottage at Lough Gur for the past five to six weeks.

Man may have been crushed to death

Port mortem results released to Gardaí this afternoon indicate that the man whose body was found amongst waste at a recycling plant in Co. Limerick was accidentally crushed to death.

The body was found yesterday at the 'Mr Binman' facility near Ballyneety.

The State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy completed her post mortem examination at Dublin's city morgue this afternoon.

Gardaí said they believe the man had only recently arrived in Limerick, and was homeless.

Body found in skip in Grange

Gardaí in Co Limerick are investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a skip.

The body was discovered by workers at a private waste facility in Grange, 13km from Limerick city, at 12.15pm this afternoon. It is understood the man was in his 30s.

Gardaí have sealed off the scene and have contacted the state pathologist's office.

The body has been brought to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick where a post mortem examination is due to be carried out this evening.

Melanie Carroll, The Limerick Rose, spoke about appearing at the Bruff Summer Festival as one of her good experiences in the run up to the Tralee Festival. Carmel O'Brien dies in road accident.

A woman has died following a road accident in BruffThe woman, a cyclist in her 40s, was hit by a car on the Bruff to Kilmallock Road, near Uregare at 6.50am.Her body has been removed to Limerick Regional Hospital.The road, which was closed for most ofthe day, has reopened after a technical examination. Gardaí have named the woman who was killed in the crash.49-year-old Carmel O’Brien from Sheerin’s Cross, Kilmallock died after her bike was struck by a car shortly before seven am.Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact Bruff Garda Station on 061-382940.

THE death of a 10-year old Andy from Grange, who was killed when goalposts at his summer soccer camp collapsed on him, has led the Department of Education to provide funding to replace unsafe physical education equipment.

The Department is allocating 2,000 euro for each primary school and 4,000 euro for every secondary school to help them renew sports equipment, with goalposts identified as a priority.

Andrew Fitzgerald, Grange, Kilmallock, had been attending a soccer camp in Bruff in August 2004, when an FAI-approved target net fixed to a portable goalpost was caught in a gust of wind, pulling it down on top of him.

He was the only child of Miriam and Patrick Fitzgerald, who have campaigned to get unsafe and unsecured goalposts replaced nationwide, following a number of injuries and fatalities.

The National Standards Authority of Ireland is also working on new standards for portable goalposts for sports such as soccer, Gaelic games and rugby. Schools have been issued with draft guidelines on ensuring goalposts comply with the highest safety levels, in the interim period

Bruff Partnership is a grouping that developed following several open public meetings called by several concerned people in the town. From those open meetings a (to which all communities, clubs and groups were invited) a committee was elected. This committee has continued to meet and is composed of representatives from those various groups. In addition the committee has representatives from Shannon Enterprise, Limerick County Enterprise Board, County Council, Bruff Community Council, Bruff Cultural and Arts Society and Ballyhoura Development Co. Ltd.
The Secretary of the Group is Michael Clifford and the Assistant Secretary is Donal Thurlow (087 2127521)

New Managers for Shannon Development

Shannon development has appointed two Limerick natives as the new Regional Managers for Limerick City and County. Finbarr Brougham who has represented Shannon Development at the Bruff Partnership Meetings is one of the people newly appointed and we offer our congratulations to him.
Finbarr Brougham and Eoghan Prendergast (the other appointee) are both experienced executives with the Development body.
They will work with the communities to help develop Limerick as the centre of the Shannon Region.
Finbarr Brougham believes his new job will keep him busy!

Another day of rain, sunshine, hailstones and some flash floods with the Fire Brigade called out in Kilmallock to clear some roads!

It is good to see that this site bitsfrombruff is receiving so many 'hits' (visitors) from all over the world..... friends in Bruff have obviously passed on the address. I have heard that some people tried to get the site but could not. Initially it was necessary to type the full web address into your web browser address line...but now Google will find it for you! Just type bitsfrombruff into the Google search box and you will find the site!

St. Patrick's Festival
We gather that the Community Council are organising a St. Patrick's Day Parade. This would of course duplicate the event advertised in the last Bruff Cultural and Arts Newsletter as quoted below

Changing Chips!
Rumour has it that the Snack Bar (Anthony O'Connor's) is changing hands. We will see what the new owners bring to the culinary scene in Bruff! Maybe soon we will have an Indian Takeaway to add to the ethnic mix!

Bruff and Drink Driving
Bruff entered the national debate this week with Derry O'Meara, local publican being interviewed on Limerick 95fm. Local publican Derry, talked about the Bruff pubs initiative with a courtesy bus. Three pubs (Derry's Bar, Clancys and Dave Clarkes) have combined to provide a free courtesy bus. He indicated that maybe a second bus would soon be provided.

INSITUFORM an English firm has been working in the Main Street this last week. They are using high tech equipment to survey the main sewers. It also looks as if work may begin on the water treatment works with activity near the entrance

Bruff is experiencing gale force winds (100 to 120 kph) as a fierce storm moves across the Atlantic. The Newswire blog (Limerick City) included an accurate warning early on Tuesday (based on reports from a tornado watch centre in USA!)..... whilst at the same time little warning from Met.ie or RTE. Throughout the night Bruff has had either no electricity or very low power. Power restored at 12.00 noon!

Reminder! The next Committee meeting is due to take place on Thursday 18th January at 8.30 pm in Clancy's Restaurant.

As we said in our last Newsletter we had plans for organising a St. Patrick's Festival, including bookings with Bands from Wales and USA. We had a very innovative approach planned for a weekend spectacular. We now find that The Community Council are going to organise a Parade and therefore we will not duplicate events...... but we wish them the very best!

Bruff seems to have been peaceful enough at Christmas. There is a new Hackney cab service being run by Eric Lye, former proprietor of the Olde Bakehouse Restaurant, (telephone number for Morning Star Hackney Cabs is 087 0614550)

The Bruff Partnership Committee with aims to promote enterprise in Bruff following the closure of Microtherm is recently formed group that deserves strong community support and participation. A meeting of the group planned for Monday 9th January was cancelled. When I have more news I will bring it here.

The demolition of MartinTreacy's Pub

The demolition of Treacy's Pub began on the 11th December. Last night the final demolition occurred. The pub has been demolished to improve the Hospital Rd. Junction. The picture on the left shows Martin Treacy the last proprietor of the pub. The site is a well known landmark in the town; the side wall of the building had the enormous Sarsfield mural painted on it in 1991. The photo below shows the scene at 8.00pm on Tuesday 12th as the final stage of the demolition begins

There is a real and vibrant air in the town. The 'Evening of Sacred Music' followed on from the Christmas Festival last weekend. The town lights are splendid with more promised this coming week.

The Limerick Gospel Choir

Mary O'Keefe, the Presenter for the evening, introduced the Limerick Gospel Choir. This talented group were not unfamiliar to the Bruff Community. They appeared in the 'Jazz at the Bakehouse' series of shows masterminded by Jon Kenny, last year. Their distinctive contribution began with their vocals being heard over the excellent sound system, well before they appeared in the aisle of the Church. Whoopi Goldberg had nothing on their singer/conductor, as they launched into "I will follow Him". Their enthusiasm brought the school choir group, (who had been assigned seats in the balcony) to their feet again as they swayed and waved and sang along with the Gospel Singers!

A distinguished Tenor Derek Moloney brought a hush to the audience with a superb 'She moved through the fair' Although there was a shyness from the congregation downstairs, it brought a standing ovation upstairs. Derek had a relaxed approach and instantly developed a rapport with the audience.

An Evening of Sacred Music Music

Last evening a group of volunteers, known as Fr. Joe's Roof Raisers, provided Bruff with a stylish and classy evening of music. The event took place at our local Catholic church, Ss. Peter & Paul's Bruff. The event was styled "An Evening of Sacred Music". The Programme began with the local school Choir from Ard Scoil Mhuire, conducted by Edel McEniry. (regular readers will know that Edel as well as being a talented local teacher, is also our current Morning Star Rose.)
This charming contribution was followed by a talented local Soprano, Margie Nagle, who contributed an exquisite 'Ave Maria'.
The Limerick Tenors, Tony Sheehan, Sean O'Shea and Eugene O'Connor finished the first half of the concert.
The country is awash with tenors, but these three contributed so well to the evening. They followed the pattern of so many Tenor trios, with group items followed by solo contributions. A highlight for the evening may have been " You Raise me Up".

Yesterday, Christmas arrived in Bruff. Santa was carried down the Main Street in a fine carriage. As the carriage passed each set of lights the lights came alive. The parade was led by the Clonmel Youth Concert and Marching Band, who are currently All Ireland Marching Band Champions!The town was so alive, the atmosphere great, the crowds happy.... and all this despite the ferocious weather! The Main Street looks great with a great Christmas tree at each end and lights all the way down the street.
